Maldives resort villas fall into two primary categories, and the distinction matters more than you might expect.

  Located on the sand with direct beach access. These villas tend to be larger, with more outdoor space and private gardens. They are ideal for travelers who prefer to fall asleep to the sound of waves rather than over the water. Beach villas are typically 20 to 30 percent less expensive than their overwater counterparts.

  Overwater Villas

  Built on stilts above the lagoon with glass floor panels, private decks, and direct ladder access to the ocean. These are the iconic Maldives experience. The sense of floating above turquoise water is something photographs cannot fully capture. Premium overwater villas include private pools, outdoor showers, and butler service.

The logistics of reaching the Maldives are simpler than most travelers expect, but a few details are important to plan correctly.

  Most international travelers arrive at Velana International Airport in Male. Direct flights are available from major hubs in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and increasingly from Europe. Many travelers connect through Dubai, Doha, Singapore, or Colombo.

  From Male, transfers to your resort are by speedboat (15 to 90 minutes) or domestic seaplane (30 to 60 minutes). Seaplane transfers operate only during daylight hours, which means if your international flight arrives after dark, you will need to overnight in Male or at an airport hotel before continuing to your resort the following morning.

  Once at your resort, you will not need transportation. Each resort island is small enough to walk or bicycle across in minutes. Some larger resorts offer buggy service between the main facilities and more distant villas.

  Inter-resort excursions are possible but not common. Most travelers choose one resort and stay for the duration. If you want variety, some travelers split their stay between two properties in different atolls, spending three to four nights at each.

The Maldives has two distinct seasons, and understanding the difference helps you choose the right travel window.

  The most popular time to visit. Clear skies, calm seas, and the best underwater visibility for snorkeling and diving. December through March is peak season with the highest rates and the most advance booking required.

  Often the best combination of pleasant weather and reasonable rates. These transitional months offer many of the dry season benefits without the peak season premium.

Because each resort is on its own island with no nearby restaurants, your meal plan choice is more consequential in the Maldives than almost any other destination.

  Breakfast and dinner included. This is sufficient for many travelers, especially those who plan to be active during the day and eat a light lunch by the pool or beach. Some resorts include a light lunch in their half-board inclusion.

  Full Board

  All three meals included. This eliminates the guesswork and is recommended for travelers who prefer not to think about food costs during their stay.

  All-Inclusive

  Meals plus beverages, including premium spirits, wines, and cocktails. Given the remote location and the markup on individual drinks, all-inclusive inclusions often represent excellent value, especially for travelers who enjoy cocktails at sunset.

  Some resorts offer room-only rates with all meals purchased separately. This provides maximum flexibility but can result in a significantly higher total cost. We generally recommend at least half board for most Maldives travelers.

The Maldives is a Muslim country, and while resorts operate independently with no restrictions on alcohol or dress code, it is worth being aware of local customs if you visit Male or any inhabited local islands.

Reef-safe sunscreen is strongly encouraged. The coral reefs surrounding your resort are the foundation of the entire ecosystem, and chemical sunscreens cause measurable damage. Many resorts now provide reef-safe options at their water sports centers.

The Maldives is a destination where you will likely want to extend your stay. Most travelers who book five nights wish they had booked seven. We recommend a minimum of five nights and ideally seven to fully decompress and take advantage of the marine experiences, spa offerings, and the simple pleasure of watching the ocean from your private deck.
