The Cape Peninsula offers dramatic coastal drives, penguin colonies at Boulders Beach, and the windswept cliffs of Cape Point where the Atlantic and Indian oceans meet. We find that many travelers underestimate Cape Town and wish they had allocated more time. We typically recommend three to four days minimum in the city and its surroundings.
The private game reserves adjacent to Kruger National Park offer some of the finest safari experiences in Africa. Unlike Kruger itself, where self-drive safaris are common and vehicles can feel numerous, the private reserves like Sabi Sand, Timbavati, and Thornybush limit the number of guests and vehicles, creating an exclusive experience with expert guides and trackers. The Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo) are all present, and the quality of sightings in these private reserves is consistently outstanding. We select lodges based on your preferences for elevated level, family-friendliness, and photographic opportunities.

Cape Town and the Cape Peninsula
Table Mountain, the V&A Waterfront, the Bo-Kaap, Kirstenbosch Gardens, and the Cape Peninsula's dramatic coastline make Cape Town one of the world's most compelling city destinations. The Constantia wine region, within 20 minutes of the city center, offers excellent tastings and dining. We recommend three to four days minimum to experience the city and its surroundings without rushing.
Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, and the Winelands
The Cape Winelands are among the most beautiful wine regions in the world, with mountain-backed estates, Cape Dutch architecture, and a dining scene that rivals the best in Europe. Stellenbosch is the historic center, while Franschhoek (founded by French Huguenots) is the culinary capital. A day or two of wine tasting here is essential for any Cape Town visit.
Kruger and Private Game Reserves
The Greater Kruger area is South Africa's premier safari destination. The private reserves adjacent to Kruger (Sabi Sand, Timbavati, Thornybush, and others) offer exclusive Big Five viewing with elevated lodges and expert guiding. A three-night safari stay is the recommended minimum, with four to five nights ideal for a more immersive experience.
Garden Route
Stretching along the southern coast from Mossel Bay to Storms River, the Garden Route offers a stunning combination of mountains, forests, lagoons, and beaches. Key stops include Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, and Tsitsikamma. The route can be driven in as few as three days, but five to seven days allows for a more relaxed pace with activities along the way.
