About Austria
Austria offers one of the most refined travel experiences in Europe. Vienna's imperial palaces and coffee house culture, Salzburg's baroque heart and musical heritage, and the alpine landscapes of the Tyrol and Salzkammergut give travelers a remarkable range to draw from. We plan Austrian itineraries that move at a considered pace, pairing the cultural depth of the cities with the quiet of the lake district and the mountains.
Vienna deserves at least three nights. The Hofburg, Schonbrunn, the Kunsthistorisches Museum, and the State Opera anchor a city that rewards slow exploration, and the coffee houses, wine taverns, and restored grand hotels give travelers a sense of what European elegance once meant and still does. Salzburg, two and a half hours west by train, is the natural second stop.
Beyond the cities, the Salzkammergut lake district and the Tyrolean Alps offer some of the most beautiful landscapes in Europe, with restored castle hotels, family-run alpine inns, and a tradition of hospitality that has been refined over generations.
Best Time to Visit
May through September offers the best weather for cities and the alps. December brings the Christmas markets of Vienna and Salzburg, among the most atmospheric in Europe. The classical music season in Vienna runs from September through June.

Vienna

Salzburg
Salzburg is best experienced over two to three nights. The old town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is compact and beautifully preserved, and our preferred properties such as the Hotel Sacher Salzburg and the Goldener Hirsch place travelers in the heart of it. Private guides bring depth to the Mozart sites, the Hohensalzburg Fortress, and the gardens of Mirabell Palace.
The Salzkammergut
The lake district east of Salzburg, with the villages of Hallstatt, St. Wolfgang, and Bad Ischl, offers one of the most beautiful landscapes in central Europe. We arrange stays at restored lakeside properties, private boat excursions, and meals at the family-run inns that define the region.
Alpine Austria
The Tyrol, the Arlberg, and the Salzburger Land offer year-round appeal. Winter brings world-class skiing at St. Anton, Lech, and Kitzbuhel, with stays at properties like the Hotel Almhof Schneider and the Schloss Elmau just over the German border. Summer is the season for hiking, alpine lakes, and the spa traditions of the region's grand hotels.
Practical notes
Vienna International Airport (VIE) is the main gateway, with Salzburg (SZG) and Innsbruck (INN) serving regional itineraries.
Austria is part of the Schengen Area and uses the euro. Trains between Vienna, Salzburg, and Innsbruck are frequent, comfortable, and our preferred way to move between cities.
We recommend a minimum of seven to ten nights to combine Vienna, Salzburg, and either the lake district or the alps.
Austria pairs naturally with Hungary, the Czech Republic, Bavaria, and northern Italy on multi-country itineraries.
