Budapest in Depth
Three to four nights in Budapest is the right amount to appreciate both sides of the Danube. We arrange private walking tours of the Castle District, the Jewish Quarter, and the grand boulevards of Pest, along with reservations at the city's leading restaurants and access to the thermal baths during quieter hours. Our preferred properties include the Four Seasons Gresham Palace, the Aria Hotel, and the Matild Palace, each offering a distinct sense of place.
Danube Cruise Pairings
Budapest is the most common embarkation or disembarkation point for Danube river cruises, and we strongly recommend at least two nights in the city on either end. We coordinate hotel stays, private transfers to the ship, and curated touring that complements rather than duplicates the cruise's included excursions.
Hungarian Wine Country
Tokaj, the historic sweet wine region of northeastern Hungary, deserves a full day or an overnight stay. We arrange private visits to family-run wineries, tastings of the legendary Aszu wines, and meals at the small handful of restaurants that have brought serious cuisine to the region.
Beyond the Capital
For travelers with a week or more, we extend itineraries to include the baroque town of Eger, the equestrian estates of the Great Hungarian Plain, and the Lake Balaton region. These extensions reveal a Hungary that few international travelers see and pair beautifully with stays in Vienna, Prague, or Vienna.
Practical notes
Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD) is the main gateway. Direct flights connect from major European hubs and select North American cities seasonally.
Hungary uses the forint, though euros are accepted at many hotels and tourist venues. Cards are widely accepted.
We recommend three to four nights in Budapest, with optional extensions to Tokaj or pairings with Vienna and Prague.
Hungary is part of the Schengen Area. US and Canadian passport holders do not require a visa for short stays.
